When it comes to tennis Grand slams it is Wimbledon that ranks in the apogee of all the titles. It is one of the highly prized events on the tennis calendar spectacularly known for its customs and traditions. It allows discreet sponsorship unlike other championships, players dressed in white clothing, umpires and ball-boys /girls in purple and green, the most important viewers are with strawberries and cream ( if you watch star sports or any sport channel telecasting Wimbledon they obviously talk about strawberries).

Wimbledon has 19 courts with centre court being the largest. In 2009, the tournament added a retractable roof to its centre court to counter British tradition of summer rain and the delays they inflict on the competitions. The first indoor court tennis match was played in night light by Andy Murray of Britain finally finished off a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory over No. 19 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland to reach the quarterfinals at the All England Club, the partisan fans celebrated their guy’s victory with quite a roar.

Wimbledon matches needs to be completed on schedule because it has one fewer day of competition than the other Grand Slam events. It is very rare in Wimbledon that any match is played on the middle Sunday in deference to the Southern London Village of Wimbledon, whose postal code, SW19, is synonymous with the tournament. Above all, Wimbledon is actually most famous for its fast and slick grass courts. If we study other Grand Slam courts such as Australian and United States open are played on asphalt like courts and French open is played on clay courts. In 2001, according to the media, the All England club began using a 100 percent perennial ryegrass seed “to provide a stronger grass more able to take the wear-and-tear of two weeks of continual usage.” That switch, coupled with the extinction of serve-and-volley play, has given rise to baseline rallies on grass – in the men and women’s game. The wearing of glass is seen where players served and their route to the net so the courts turn brown like clay along the baseline.

Players always considered Wimbledon very challenging to play because of uncertainty in the jumps of the ball. It is not only robust physical fitness but also racquet skills especially needed to challenge the court. Players who played clay court in French open a month before Wimbledon will need to adapt quicker to the tournament. The 2009 defending singles champions were Rafael Nadal in men’s Singles and Venus Williams in women’s singles. Nadal made a surprise win over lawn court specialist Federer in 2008 Wimbledon in third straight final,6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7. Federer had won five consecutive titles before losing what many consider the greatest tennis match in history. Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title by defeating her sister Serena, 6-4, 7-5, but the two joined sides to win their third women’s doubles at the All England Club in 2008.

Unfortunately in 2009, defending champion Rafael Nadal pulled out from Wimbledon citing knee injury and he also not in his best form after an early demise from French open. This is obviously an upset for fans of Wimbledon. Despite all this early developments, Wimbledon 2009 still had its own best essence to entertain the audiences. Especially Brit or Scott Andy Murray’s entry to semifinals made British fans excited about the match. This also caused ticket prices to rise for centre court semi finals match. Unfortunate for English fans, Andy Murray did not go through finals to make history since Bunny Austin of England in 1938. But the match was an exhilarating experience for the spectators to see aces, winners and volleys jumping off the court. Another best match is played in women’s single Semi final between Serena Williams of USA and Elena Dementieva of Russia. Though Dementieva played elegant tennis compared to Serena but Serena’s powerful forehand and backhand obviously helped her to sweep the semi finals. Finals of women’s single are between Venus Williams and Serena Williams. Venus has a slight advantage over Serena in winning the crown because of her earlier splendid performance in Wimbledon. Roger Federer will enter history books if he wins the finals of Wimbledon match to claim the highest Grand Slams winners in Men’s singles. The much awaited match of men’s finals will be played between Roger Federer of Switzerland and Andy Roddick of USA.

Tennis trivia will show that it was a sport that was developed mostly in the eighteen hundreds. Although there are a few similar sports that were being developed by different people, the current game as we know it was created by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield. He invented the game while playing at the All England Croquet Club. The club has expanded to include the name Tennis in its name since then, and is now home to the most prestigious and important tennis event in the professional game, Wimbledon.

A Tennis quiz shows that in addition to Wimbledon there are three other events which are considered the most important tournaments for professional players of the game to win. They all also have early roots, and are the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open. The fact that the major tournaments are all held in four different countries is a major testament to how popular the game was and how it quickly spread throughout the world in its early years.

Tennis trivia will show that the game is a simple one in essence. Although many of the tournaments are now played on artificial tournaments, Wimbledon is still played on grass. Essentially, all one needs to play the game is an appropriate playing surface, a net, two rackets, balls, and to mark out the outlines of the court. There are two sets of lines on each court; with the smaller representing the boundary for a singles match and the larger boundary for a doubles match.

The four tournaments mentioned previously are known as the Grand Slam events. Over the years, there have been certain players who have dominated at those events for many years. The male player with the most grand slam wins of all time is Roger Federer, still can active player, with 15. Pete Sampras is next with 14, and he is also the winner of the most Wimbledon titles. Other players like Jimmy Connor, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, and Rafael Nadal are famous men’s players.

Female players who have dominated the sport include Margaret Court and Steffi Graf, with 24 and 22 grand slam titles respectively. Currently, the most dominating women playing the sport are the Williams sisters, who have been able to win consistently in both solo and doubles play. Serena Williams has won 12 Grand Slam events to date while her sister Venus has won 7.

Jimmy Connors quiz questions are an important part of any recap of the history of tennis, as he remains one of the most successful players to ever professionally play the sport. One of the facts in Jimmy Connors trivia that shows just how great this tennis star was, is the fact that he is one of only five athletes that has won a Grand Slam singles tournament on Grass, Hard, and Clay courts, as he was a master of all surfaces the game is played on. He even managed to win the US Open alone, on all three different types of surfaces.

A Jimmy Connors quiz point that is perhaps the most often talked about statistic of his career is the number of weeks that he was ranked as the number one tennis player in the world. He became the first ranked player in 1974 and remained in that spot for 160 weeks. Although he would totally be the first ranked player for 268 weeks, the 160 consecutive weeks was the longest period a person had held that position, and stayed as the record until 2007, when Roger Federer would achieve the new record of most consecutive weeks at number one.

Jimmy Connors trivia includes interesting facts about his games against other famous players of his time. Connors would defeat Bjorn Borg at the US Open, and also lose to him at the 1977 Wimbledon tournament, and it would be Borg who was able to break the consecutive streak of Connors atop the tennis ratings. He also had a much celebrated win against John McEnroe, then the best player in the world, in Wimbledon in 1982.

Connors was also both the face of tennis racket evolution, and of the past of racket technology. During the early part of his career he became one of the faces of the Wilson T2000 racket which was made of steel instead of wood as most of its predecessors has been. He would play with this racket for decades, and what had once been innovation became traditionalism, and while others moved on to other types of rackets he continued to play with the Wilson, even reverting to it once after changing to a newer type of racket construction. It took until 1987 before he would switch full time to a graphite construction racket, which was 19 years after the introduction of the T2000 racket which he helped introduce to the world.
